Repurpose your content | One week of travel gave me content for a year and changed my life forever

In April of 2018 I packed my bag and set off on a solo adventure to Bali and its surrounding islands. It was an experience that has changed my life forever. Leading to being featured in Conde Naste Traveller and making connections with myself and friends that will last a lifetime.

I left in excitement and fear that something would go wrong. I had been planning this trip for over one year! The excitement and nerves are feelings that I have yet to reach again.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO RE-PURPOSE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT

Whether it’s photos, videos, blog posts or Instagram captions; that information can and SHOULD BE repurposed!

If you think of your favourite influencer or podcaster you’ve probably learned a thing or two from them or about them. Do you think I learned my favourite photographer Peter McKinnon loves coffee, Ford, tattoos and off-roading because he said it ONE time? No, it’s because he talks about these things constantly.

As compliant humans, repeat exposure is absolutely necessary in order for us to remember information or learn a new concept. How do you think we were taught at school? It's more of an indoctrination technique than "teaching". Therefore, repeating your information will help your audience get to know what you’re about and also help form your brand.

Soon your audience begins to remember YOU as the person that taught them XY or Z because they’ve heard you say it 5, 6, or 47 times! You might be thinking…47 times? Won’t they be super annoyed with me? and my honest answer to that is yes - they could be. I can't stand to see people posting about beauty products anymore. Most, especially when they are representing ONE brand and that ONE brand ONLY.

Chances are someone is following you because they like what you share and they like the constant reminders. Remember you are only getting their attention for a few seconds if that before they scroll on or move to the next piece of content. We are constantly stimulated with information coming from a million different directions and remembering something we read is one thing but taking action requires repeated exposure.

HOW REPURPOSING PHOTOS AND CONTENT SAVES TIME

Another bonus to repurposing is that you don’t have to feel like you need to constantly be thinking of new content.

If only a minority of people read our very first blog posts and the content is still relevant, all it takes is a bit of tweaking, quickly edit and re-write then share again!

Here’s a BIG pro tip for using images again. You must be worried your audience will recognize the photo... so you can flip the image horizontally to give it a new look. OR choose a different photo from that same shoot.

ps. - if you are going to use the flip trick you’ll notice that if there is any writing in the photo it will end up being backwards so you probably don’t want to use it in that case... or practice your photoshop skills.
